How to Treat or Cure Cancer
Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only
Introductory summary
How cancer is treated: biopsy, staging, the tumor board, surgery, radiation, medicines, follow-up - the sequence.
Cancer treatment follows a fixed sequence: prove it, stage it, plan it, treat it, follow it. Understanding the sequence removes half the fear.
Step 1: Diagnosis (prove it)
No cancer is treated on suspicion. A biopsy - examining the actual tissue - confirms cancer and its exact type. Scans (ultrasound, CT, MRI, PET as needed) map it. Blood markers support specific cancers. If anyone proposes cancer treatment without a biopsy, walk out.
Step 2: Staging and planning
The stage (0-4) plus the cancer's biology decide the plan. Good centers discuss the case in a tumor board - surgeon, medical oncologist, radiation oncologist together. Ask: what is the stage, what is the goal (cure or control), what are the options, what happens if we wait?
Step 3: The treatments
- Surgery: removes the tumor when it is local - often curative alone in early stages
- Radiation therapy: targeted high-energy beams; curative or symptom-relieving
- Chemotherapy: drug cycles against dividing cells
- Targeted therapy and immunotherapy: when the cancer's testing supports them
- Hormonal therapy: for hormone-driven cancers
- Combinations are normal: surgery then chemo, chemo with radiation - sequencing is the science
- Palliative care: from diagnosis, not the end - pain, symptoms, family support run alongside treatment and measurably improve life and sometimes length of it
Step 4: Follow-up
Treatment ends, surveillance continues: scheduled scans and visits for years, because recurrence caught early is treatable. Finishing treatment without follow-up is a half-finished job.
Choosing where and who
A qualified oncology team at a cancer center or medical college; a second opinion before major treatment is normal and welcome, not an insult. Beware anyone guaranteeing cures, demanding secrecy, or dismissing biopsy.
Where classical care fits
Supportive only: strength, appetite, symptom comfort and recovery alongside the oncology plan, with the oncologist informed, from a qualified vaidya. The classics themselves graded advanced growths as difficult or incurable - the honest tradition supports the honest pathway: biopsy, stage, treat, follow up.
Emergencies during the journey
Fever during chemotherapy (especially low-count phases), uncontrolled bleeding, sudden breathlessness, new confusion: emergency - 112 / 102.
One-line summary
Biopsy proves it, staging sizes it, the tumor board plans it, surgery/radiation/medicines treat it, follow-up guards it - and supportive classical care walks beside, never instead.
