Causes of Cancer

Introductory summary

What causes cancer? Tobacco, alcohol, infections, obesity, pollution, age and genes - and the myths to drop.

Cancer begins when a cell's DNA is damaged in ways that let it grow without obeying the body's stop signals. No single habit or food "causes" cancer by itself - risk builds from exposures, biology and chance over years. But the major drivers are well known, and several are avoidable.

The big avoidable drivers (especially in India)

  • Tobacco, every form: smoking AND smokeless (gutka, khaini, paan with tobacco) - the single largest cause, behind most mouth, lung and throat cancers
  • Alcohol: raises risk of mouth, throat, liver, breast and other cancers; with tobacco the risks multiply
  • Infections: HPV (cervix), hepatitis B and C (liver), H. pylori (stomach) - several are vaccine- or treatment-preventable
  • Areca nut (supari): cancer-causing even without tobacco
  • Obesity and inactivity: linked to breast, colon and several other cancers
  • Diet pattern: very low fruit-vegetable intake, heavy processed and red meat, very salty or very hot foods, aflatoxin-contaminated grains
  • Pollution and occupational exposures: air pollution (lung), asbestos, benzene, certain dyes and pesticides
  • Radiation: excessive UV (skin) and unnecessary radiation exposure

The non-modifiable drivers

  • Age: risk rises steeply after 50 - most cancer is a disease of accumulated years
  • Inherited genes: BRCA1/2 (breast, ovary), Lynch syndrome (colon and others) and similar - a strong family history matters and deserves genetic counseling
  • Hormonal factors: early periods, late menopause, no pregnancies shift breast and ovarian risk modestly

What does NOT cause cancer

Cancer is not contagious, not caused by stress alone, not caused by a single food, and not a punishment. Tight clothing, mobile phones (evidence so far), and underarm deodorants are not established causes. Keeping the myths out matters: they distract from the real drivers above.

The classical frame

Classical Ayurveda described abnormal growths (granthi, arbuda) as arising from aggravated doshas acting on tissues weakened by wrong diet, wrong routine and suppressed urges - the same "long exposure plus susceptible tissue" logic, in older vocabulary. It is an interpretive frame, not a mechanism.

One-line summary

Tobacco in any form, alcohol, infections like HPV and hepatitis, obesity and pollution drive most cancers; age and genes set the baseline - which is why prevention and screening are real medicine.
