Types of COVID-19

Introductory summary
COVID has never been one fixed illness - the virus kept changing through Alpha, Delta, Omicron and beyond, each variant rewriting how fast it spread and how sick it made people. What variants are, how the illness types range from silent infection to pneumonia, and what the current variants mean for you now.
Doctors classify COVID by severity - because severity decides everything: home rest versus hospital ward versus ICU. The virus's variants add a second axis worth understanding briefly.
By severity - the classification that guides care
- Asymptomatic: positive test, no symptoms. Common, contagious, needs no treatment - just sensible isolation
- Mild: cold-or-flu-like illness without breathing trouble - fever, cough, sore throat, ache. Home care: rest, fluids, paracetamol. The large majority of cases today
- Moderate: lung involvement (pneumonia) visible on scans but oxygen levels still normal - monitored closely, often at home with medical guidance, oximeter checks twice daily
- Severe: oxygen saturation dropping below 94, breathing rapid and labored - hospital, oxygen, and medicines like steroids and antivirals under supervision
- Critical: respiratory failure or multi-organ strain - ICU care, advanced oxygen support
By variant - the evolving alphabet
Variants are the virus's new editions: from the original strain through Delta (the severe 2021 wave) to Omicron and its descendants (faster spreading, generally milder in vaccinated people). Practical meaning for ordinary life: vaccines and boosters are updated against recent variants; symptoms shift slightly between them; and public-health guidance follows whichever is circulating. Individuals need no variant-specific action - the same rules protect against all.
By timing
- Acute COVID: the illness itself, days to weeks
- Long COVID (post-COVID condition): symptoms persisting or appearing beyond 4-12 weeks - fatigue, brain fog, breathlessness - a real condition covered in the complications article
Why severity classification matters to you
Mild: home with an oximeter and a doctor's number. Any drift toward breathlessness or dropping oxygen: that is the line to hospital. Knowing the line in advance is what kept families calm through the waves.
One-line summary
COVID is classified by severity - asymptomatic and mild managed at home, moderate watched closely, severe and critical treated in hospital - with variants changing the background, not the rules.
