Types of Diabetes Mellitus

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Type 1 is autoimmune and insulin-for-life, type 2 the lifestyle majority, gestational pregnancy's warning, prediabetes the reversible fork.

"Diabetes" is several different conditions sharing one finding - high blood sugar. The type decides the treatment from day one.

Type 1 diabetes

  • Autoimmune destruction of insulin-producing cells - absolute insulin deficiency
  • Usually begins in childhood, adolescence or young adulthood, often abruptly
  • Insulin is not optional here - it is life support, from diagnosis onward, for life

Type 2 diabetes

  • Insulin resistance plus a gradually tiring pancreas - the vast majority (around 90%) of all diabetes
  • Linked to family history, belly fat, inactivity, age - increasingly appearing in the 30s in India
  • Managed with food, movement, tablets, and sometimes insulin later - needing insulin is the disease progressing, not the patient failing

Gestational diabetes

  • First appearing in pregnancy, usually mid-pregnancy; screened for universally because it affects the baby's growth
  • Usually resolves after delivery - but it is a loud warning: half of these mothers develop type 2 within years without lifestyle care

Prediabetes

  • Sugar above normal, below the diabetes line (fasting 100-125, HbA1c 5.7-6.4%)
  • The most important "type" to know - because here, lifestyle change genuinely turns the ship around

The rarer ones

  • MODY and other genetic forms: young-onset, strongly familial patterns that need specific diagnosis
  • Secondary diabetes: from pancreatic disease, long steroid use, or other endocrine conditions

One-line summary

Type 1 is autoimmune and insulin-for-life, type 2 is the lifestyle-linked majority, gestational is pregnancy's warning shot, and prediabetes is the reversible fork in the road - the label matters because the treatment follows it.
