Prevention of Dysentery

Introductory summary

Preventing dysentery: soap and handwashing first, safe water, hot cooked food, fly control - the boring weapons that win.

Every case of dysentery is a small failure of the same chain - germs from stool reaching a mouth - and every link of that chain can be cut. Prevention here is not exotic; it is boring, proven, and powerful.

Hands - the single biggest weapon. Wash with soap: after the toilet, after changing a child, before cooking, before eating, after touching anything from outside. Soap and twenty seconds beat any bottle of sanitizer for this particular job. When a family member has dysentery, this doubles in importance - the household is exactly where Shigella spreads.

Water - know yours. Drink water that is boiled, filtered or from a verified safe supply. During monsoon and in areas with old or leaking pipes, treat tap water as suspect - one minute of a rolling boil kills the germs in question. Carry your own water when out; be wary of ice, which is only as safe as the water it was made from.

Food - hot, cooked, peeled or skipped. Eat food cooked fresh and served hot. Raw salads, cut fruit from carts, chutneys sitting open, and anything washed in unknown water are the classic vehicles - more so from street vendors during monsoon. Fruit you peel yourself is safe. Leftovers get reheated properly or discarded.

Flies and sanitation. Cover food, dispose of waste covered, keep toilets clean and closed-lid where possible. Flies ferry dysentery germs from filth to food with mechanical efficiency.

When someone at home is ill: separate towel, cleaned toilet after each use, the patient does not cook for others, and everyone's handwashing goes up a level - for the illness and a couple of weeks after.

There is no widely used dysentery vaccine for the general public yet - Shigella vaccines are in development. So the shield is behavioral: soap, safe water, hot food, covered waste. Unexciting, and the reason whole countries have made dysentery rare.
