Diet and Food Guidance for Food Poisoning

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Fluids first, bland foods when hungry, foods to avoid, and safe food handling.

Food and drink matter in two ways: replacing fluids first, then returning to normal eating gently. Fluids are more important than food in the first day.

During vomiting and diarrhoea

  • Take small, frequent sips of ORS or clean fluids.
  • Do not force solid food. A short pause is fine.

When you feel hungry: bland and easy foods

  • Plain rice, khichdi, rice gruel or porridge
  • Bananas, boiled potato, toast or plain biscuits
  • Thin dal soup and clear vegetable soup
  • Curd in small amounts if you tolerate it
  • Boiled eggs or plain chicken, once you feel better

Foods and drinks to avoid for a few days

  • Fried, oily and very spicy food
  • Raw salads and unpeeled raw fruit when the source is uncertain
  • Alcohol and strong tea or coffee
  • Milk-heavy and creamy foods, if they upset you
  • Sugary drinks and fizzy drinks in large amounts

Resuming normal food

You do not need a long restricted diet. Return to normal food gradually over a few days as appetite and stools settle.

Safe food habits to prevent repeat illness

  • Wash hands before cooking and eating.
  • Cook meat, eggs and seafood thoroughly.
  • Refrigerate leftovers promptly and reheat until piping hot.
  • Do not leave cooked food out for more than two hours, less in hot weather.
  • Keep raw and cooked food separate.
  • Use safe, clean drinking water and avoid ice of unknown source.
  • Wash fruit and vegetables well.

Ayurvedic view

Ayurveda suggests light, warm, easily digested food such as moong khichdi after the acute phase, avoiding heavy, oily and stale items. This fits modern advice and is a comfort measure.

See a doctor

Persistent symptoms or warning signs need care. For emergencies, call 112 or 102.
