How to treat or cure pelvic inflammatory disease

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

How pelvic inflammatory disease is treated and what to expect long term.

PID can be cured with antibiotics, especially when treated early. Treatment aims to clear the infection, ease pain and protect fertility.

Step 1: see a doctor quickly

If PID is suspected, treatment starts without waiting for all test results.

Step 2: antibiotics

  • Mild to moderate PID is treated at home with antibiotic tablets, usually with an injection, for about 14 days
  • Severe PID, pregnancy, abscess, or no improvement needs hospital and intravenous antibiotics
  • Take every dose, as stopping early can leave infection behind

Step 3: treat your partner

Recent partners need testing and treatment even if they feel well. Avoid sex until you and your partner have finished treatment.

Step 4: review

  • Recheck after 2 to 3 days. If you are not better, you may need hospital treatment or a scan.
  • Test again for STIs after about 3 months

If an abscess forms

Drainage by ultrasound-guided needle or surgery may be needed in addition to antibiotics.

Long-term effects

If tubes are scarred, you may have chronic pelvic pain or difficulty conceiving. Fertility treatment such as IVF can help. Ectopic pregnancy risk is higher, so early scan in any pregnancy is advised.

Ayurvedic support

Some people use Ayurvedic diet and routine for general well-being. It does not clear the infection. Do not use herbs or washes in place of antibiotics.

What to avoid

Douching, vaginal herbal inserts, and sex before treatment is complete.

See a doctor if pain is severe, fever persists, or you have repeated infections.

Remember

PID is curable when treated in time. Finish treatment, treat your partner and attend your review.
