How to treat or cure stroke

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Stroke is treated in hospital against the clock: thrombolysis, thrombectomy, and months of rehabilitation. No home remedy can treat a stroke.

There is no home treatment for stroke, and "cure" depends on how fast emergency treatment begins. The honest answer: stroke is treated in a hospital, against the clock. Call 112 immediately at the first symptom - that call is the treatment's first step.

Emergency treatment in hospital

  • Brain scan first (CT or MRI) to tell a clot from a bleed.
  • Thrombolysis (clot-busting medicine): for eligible ischemic stroke patients, usually within 4.5 hours of symptom onset.
  • Mechanical thrombectomy: a catheter procedure to pull the clot out of large brain arteries, effective up to 24 hours in selected patients.
  • For bleeds: blood pressure control, reversal of blood thinners, and sometimes surgery or clipping/coiling of an aneurysm.
  • Stroke unit care: patients treated in dedicated stroke units have better survival and recovery.

Recovery treatment (weeks to months)

  • Physiotherapy for strength, balance, and walking
  • Occupational therapy for daily activities like dressing, eating, and bathing
  • Speech and swallowing therapy for communication and safe eating
  • Treatment of depression and emotional changes, which are common and treatable
  • Family training so care continues safely at home

What does not treat stroke

  • Massage, oils, or home remedies during the acute event - these waste the treatment window
  • Any product claiming to dissolve clots or cure paralysis at home
  • Stopping prescribed medicines in favor of alternatives

Where traditional care fits

After the acute phase and with the treating doctor's agreement, some families add supervised Ayurvedic rehabilitation support.

Ayurvedic view (interpretive): Classical panchakarma, abhyanga, and basti are described for pakshaghata recovery. Evidence is limited; they belong only in the stable recovery phase, as an adjunct, under a qualified practitioner, and alongside prescribed modern care.

Remember: Stroke is treated by minutes, not remedies. Call 112, get to a stroke-capable hospital, and then commit to months of structured rehabilitation for the best recovery.
