Introductory summary
Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder in which the body makes too little haemoglobin, causing anaemia that ranges from silent carrier states to severe disease needing lifelong transfusions.
What is thalassemia?
Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder - passed from parents to children through genes - in which the body cannot make enough normal haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. The result is anaemia and, in severe forms, the breakdown of red blood cells faster than the body can replace them.
It is one of the most common genetic disorders in India, where an estimated 3-4% of people carry a thalassemia gene, with higher rates in certain communities. Carriers (thalassemia trait or minor) are usually healthy and often never know they carry the gene. The danger appears when two carriers have a child: with each pregnancy there is a 25% chance the child inherits both faulty genes and develops thalassemia major, a severe form needing lifelong treatment.
The main forms:
- Thalassemia trait/minor: one faulty gene. Mild or no anaemia, normal life, no treatment needed - but the carrier can pass the gene on.
- Thalassemia intermedia: moderate disease; anaemia that may need occasional transfusions.
- Thalassemia major (Cooley's anaemia): severe disease appearing in infancy; survival depends on regular blood transfusions and iron-removing (chelation) medicines.
The most important message: thalassemia major is preventable. A simple blood test identifies carriers, and screening before marriage or early in pregnancy - with partner testing and prenatal diagnosis when both are carriers - can prevent the birth of an affected child.
Remember: thalassemia is inherited, carriers are healthy, and carrier screening is the single most powerful step against it.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive)
Ayurveda describes inherited weakness of blood and vitality in broad terms, but thalassemia is a genetic disorder diagnosed by blood tests and managed by modern medicine. Traditional measures can support general health, not change the gene.
