Introductory summary

TB is treated with a free 6-month combination antibiotic course (HRZE); every dose matters - stopping early causes drug-resistant TB, a far worse disease.

Medicines and products for tuberculosis

The treatment is a fixed combination antibiotic course - and it is free. Under India's National TB Elimination Programme, diagnosis and the full treatment cost nothing at government centres. Standard drug-sensitive TB is treated for 6 months: an intensive phase with four drugs (isoniazid, rifampicin, pyrazinamide, ethambutol - "HRZE") followed by a continuation phase. Fixed-dose combination tablets make this simple to take.

The rules that save lives:

  • Never miss doses and never stop early. Symptoms improve within weeks, but the bacteria are not gone. Stopping at "feeling better" is exactly how drug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) is born - needing 9-18 months of harder, toxic medicines, with worse outcomes. Completion is everything.
  • Take the full daily dose together, as directed - support from family, workplace or a treatment supporter helps completion.
  • Expect orange-red urine and tears on rifampicin - harmless and normal.
  • Report side effects rather than stopping: yellow eyes/skin (liver), vision changes (ethambutol), joint pains, severe nausea, numbness/tingling (isoniazid - your doctor often adds vitamin B6).
  • No alcohol during treatment.

Drug-resistant TB: diagnosed by molecular testing (CBNAAT), treated at specialist centres with longer, newer regimens - still curable, but far harder. Every completed standard course prevents it.

What is NOT treatment: herbal TB products, kadhas, "immunity boosters" sold for TB, or any product suggesting you can skip or shorten the antibiotic course. Avoid steroids unless specifically prescribed.

Remember: free, effective, 6 months, every dose - that is the entire formula for curing TB.

Ayurvedic view (interpretive)

No traditional product replaces HRZE. Supportive care may accompany the course with the treating doctor's knowledge.
