Causes of typhoid

Introductory summary

Typhoid is caused by Salmonella Typhi bacteria spread through contaminated food and water - poor sanitation and unsafe drinking water are the real drivers, not 'cold' or weather.

Causes of typhoid

Typhoid fever is caused by a single bacterium: Salmonella Typhi. It spreads only from person to person through the faecal-oral route - meaning the bacteria leave an infected person's body in stool or urine, contaminate water or food, and enter the next person through the mouth.

How the infection actually travels:

  • Contaminated drinking water - the single biggest source in India. Municipal water mixed with sewage, untreated borewell water, or water stored in unclean containers.
  • Contaminated food - raw vegetables washed in unsafe water, cut fruits and salads sold on the street, food handled by an infected person, milk and milk products kept unrefrigerated, and shellfish from polluted water.
  • Poor hand hygiene - a food handler who does not wash hands after using the toilet can infect dozens of people. Flies moving between faeces and food also carry the bacteria.
  • Carriers - about 2-5% of people who recover from typhoid continue to harbour the bacteria (usually in the gallbladder) and shed it in stool for months or years, while feeling perfectly well. Such "carriers" can silently spread the disease - the reason even a "clean-looking" cook can be a source.

What raises your risk: drinking unfiltered or unboiled water, eating street food with raw items, living in crowded areas with poor sanitation, and low stomach acid (which normally kills some bacteria).

What does NOT cause typhoid: getting wet in rain, cold weather, eating curd or cold foods, and "weak blood" - none of these folk explanations is true. Only the bacteria causes it.

Remember: typhoid is a food-and-water disease. Safe water and hygienic food prevent it; no weather or food-temperature myth explains it.

Ayurvedic view (interpretive)

Ayurvedic texts would place a prolonged fever like this under Santata Jvara (continuous fever) linked to contaminated ahara-jala (food and water). The framework stresses clean water and digestive strength - useful hygiene instincts, though the actual cause is a bacterium requiring antibiotics.
