Home remedies for typhoid

Introductory summary
No home remedy cures typhoid - antibiotics are essential. At home the real work is fluids, rest, light food and watching for danger signs like severe abdominal pain or confusion.
Home remedies for typhoid
Let us be direct: there is no home remedy, herb or kitchen preparation that cures typhoid. The bacteria multiply inside cells of the body where no home measure can reach them, and untreated typhoid can perforate the intestine - an emergency that can be fatal. The cure is a full course of the right antibiotic.
What home care genuinely does is support recovery alongside medicines - and this part matters:
- Fluids, generously: high fever and poor intake dehydrate quickly. Oral rehydration solution (ORS), water, thin dal water, rice kanji, coconut water and clear soups - small sips, very often. Dehydration is what makes a typhoid patient look and feel far worse.
- Complete rest: the body is fighting a bloodstream infection. Strict bed rest during the fever phase; return to work or school only after the doctor agrees.
- Light, high-calorie food: khichdi, dal-rice, soft idli, curd-rice, bananas, mashed potato, boiled eggs. Frequent small meals - appetite is poor, but fever burns calories fast, and weight loss worsens weakness.
- Fever comfort: paracetamol exactly as the doctor prescribes, and tepid sponging for very high fever.
- Hygiene at home: the patient's stool contains the bacteria. Dedicated utensils and towels, thorough handwashing with soap after using the toilet and before handling food, and the patient should not cook for others until cleared.
Danger signs - go to hospital immediately, call 112 if needed: sudden severe abdominal pain or a hard, board-like abdomen (possible perforation), blood in stool, persistent vomiting with no intake, confusion or unusual drowsiness, fainting, or breathlessness.
Avoid: self-prescribed antibiotics, stopping the prescribed course early when fever falls, heavy and fried food, and unverified "typhoid kadha" claims.
Remember: fluids, rest, light food and strict hygiene support recovery - but only antibiotics cure typhoid, and severe abdominal pain is a medical emergency.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive)
Ayurvedic fever care - langhana (lightness), manda-peya (thin gruels), boiled water - aligns sensibly with modern typhoid diet advice. These are supportive traditions for comfort and digestion, never a substitute for antibiotics.
