Prevention of vitamin deficiency

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Varied food and sunlight for everyone; targeted supplements for pregnancy, vegetarians, the elderly and certain medicines.

Preventing vitamin deficiency is largely a food-and-lifestyle project, with targeted supplements only for the groups that genuinely need them.

Eat variety, every day. Four to five food groups daily - grains (preferably unpolished), dals/legumes, vegetables (green leafy plus coloured), fruits, and dairy/eggs or meat/fish - covers nearly every vitamin for a healthy adult. Monotonous staples-only diets are the root cause to avoid.

Get midday sun. 15-30 minutes of direct sunlight on skin a few times a week remains the most effective vitamin D prevention; indoor and glass-filtered light does not work.

Cook to keep vitamins: light cooking, minimal water wastage, fresh over stored produce.

Supplement the known risk groups:

  • All women planning pregnancy and in the first trimester: folic acid (prevents neural tube defects - non-negotiable, start before conception).
  • Vegetarians and especially vegans: B12.
  • The elderly: D and B12, typically with calcium for bones.
  • People on metformin or long-term antacids: periodic B12 testing and supplementation as advised.
  • Post-bariatric surgery or gut disease: supervised lifelong plans.
  • Children in undernourished settings: vitamin A per national programmes.

Do not supplement blindly. Testing first matters: unnecessary high-dose A and D accumulate to toxic levels, and folate without B12 status can mask a serious deficiency. More supplements do not mean more health.

Lifestyle: limit alcohol (damages intake, absorption and storage), do not smoke (raises vitamin C needs), treat chronic gut problems, and review long-term medicines with your doctor.

Ayurvedic view (interpretive): traditional prevention - seasonal varied diet, daily routine, sunlight, moderate habits - overlaps naturally with these steps within an interpretive framework; evidence is limited and it complements, never replaces, the specific measures above.

Remember: varied food and midday sun for everyone; targeted supplements for pregnancy, vegetarians, the elderly, and people on certain medicines; testing before any high-dose product. Prevention is simple and cheap - damage from neglect is neither.
