Symptoms of vitamin deficiency

Introductory summary

Fatigue, poor immunity and skin-hair changes are common threads - but the specific vitamin decides the symptom pattern.

Vitamin deficiency symptoms depend entirely on which vitamin is missing - but fatigue, poor immunity and skin-hair changes are the common threads.

General and overlapping signs. Persistent tiredness, low energy, frequent infections, slow wound healing, dry skin, hair fall and brittle nails appear across several deficiencies and are nonspecific - they justify a check-up, not a guess.

Vitamin-specific patterns:

  • Vitamin D: bone pain, backache, muscle weakness and aches, frequent fractures in severe cases; in children, bowed legs and delayed milestones (rickets).
  • Vitamin B12: tingling and numbness in hands and feet, unsteady walking, poor memory, smooth sore tongue, plus anaemia's fatigue and pallor.
  • Folate: anaemia with tiredness, pallor, breathlessness; in pregnancy, deficiency raises the risk of neural tube defects in the baby.
  • Vitamin A: poor night vision (night blindness is the classic early sign), dry eyes, dry skin, frequent infections.
  • Vitamin C: bleeding gums, easy bruising, slow-healing wounds, joint pain (scurvy when severe - now uncommon but seen in the elderly, smokers and severely restricted diets).
  • B-complex others: B1 (beriberi - nerve and heart), B2 (cracked lip corners, sore tongue), B3 (pellagra - diarrhoea, dermatitis, dementia), B6 (nerve symptoms, especially with TB medicines).

The important caveat: these symptoms overlap heavily with each other and with non-vitamin problems like thyroid disease, diabetes and depression. Symptoms suggest; only blood tests confirm. Do not start high-dose supplements on symptoms alone - some vitamins (A, D especially) are toxic in overdose.

Ayurvedic view (interpretive): weakness, pallor, tingling and low resilience are described under vata imbalance and dhatu kshaya patterns - an interpretive framework with limited evidence. It may guide supportive care alongside medical evaluation, never instead of it.

Remember: fatigue + hair fall + frequent infections = worth a check-up, not a supplement spree. Match the vitamin to the symptom pattern with a blood test before treating.
