Acne Causes: Diet, Hormones and Ayurvedic Triggers
Why do breakouts start, and why do they keep coming back? Ayurveda calls acne Yuvana Pidaka or Mukhadushika - "eruptions of youth" - and lists its triggers in surprising detail. Modern dermatology has its own list. Put the two together and most people's personal causes become easy to spot.
The Classical Causes (Nidana)
Sushruta Samhita (Nidana Sthana 13), Ashtanga Hridaya (Uttara Tantra 31) and Bhavaprakasha attribute Mukhadushika to a few repeating factors:
- Age itself (Yuvana Avastha): adolescence and young adulthood, when tissue metabolism and Pitta-Rakta naturally surge - the classical reason acne is called a condition of youth
- Diet: excessive pungent, sour, salty, oily and fried food; too much curd, unrefined sugar, fermented items and fast food
- Daily rhythm: day sleeping (Divasvapna), staying up late (Prajagara), and irregular meals (Vishamasana)
- Mind: anger, worry and mental agitation, which classical texts say heat and corrupt the blood tissue (Rakta Dhatu)
- Suppressed natural urges: holding back vomiting, bowel movements or sleep, which forces toxins into the channels of the face
The mechanism: vitiated Kapha and Vata combine with disturbed Rakta Dhatu and lodge in the skin's micro-channels, erupting as pimples.
What Modern Science Says
Dermatology describes four drivers: excess sebum production, clogged hair follicles (dead skin plus oil), bacteria (C. acnes), and inflammation - with hormones (androgens) as the master switch, which is why puberty, menstrual cycles, and conditions like PCOS trigger flares. Stress, certain cosmetics, and friction (helmets, collars, phone screens) add to it, per NHS acne guidance.
The overlap with the classical list is real: hormonal surge of youth, stress, sleep disruption, and heavy greasy food appear in both.
The Triggers You Can Actually Change
- Day sleep and late nights - the most underrated classical triggers
- Heavy dairy-and-fried-food patterns, especially curd at night
- Harsh scrubbing and pore-clogging cosmetics
- Touching, picking, and squeezing - both systems agree this worsens everything
- Unmanaged stress
Frequently Asked Questions
Does eating oily food directly cause pimples? Not one-to-one, but both traditions link heavy greasy dietary patterns to worse breakouts. Your own diary of flares is the best guide.
Is acne caused by "dirty blood"? Classical texts speak of Rakta-dushti (vitiated blood tissue) - a traditional framework, not a laboratory diagnosis. Modern science explains acne through sebum, follicles, bacteria and hormones. The practical advice that follows from both is similar.
Why does my acne flare before exams? Stress. Both Ayurveda (Krodha, Chinta) and modern dermatology (stress hormones) recognise this pattern.
Conclusion
Acne has identifiable causes - youth hormones, diet, sleep rhythm, stress, and habits like picking. Some you cannot change (age, genetics); most you can. That is where every treatment plan, Ayurvedic or modern, begins.
