Causes of autism

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Autism's causes are mostly genetic - and firmly not vaccines, not parenting, not anything a parent chose. What research actually knows, and the myths laid to rest.

Causes of Autism

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental difference - the brain develops along a different path from very early in life, shaping how a person communicates, processes sensory information and experiences the world. It is not caused by anything a parent did or did not do, and it is not caused by vaccines. Research points overwhelmingly to genetics, with some additional early developmental factors. For a reliable overview, see NHS guidance on autism.

Genetics: The Main Driver

Autism is one of the most heritable neurodevelopmental conditions. Hundreds of genes contribute - most commonly as a combination of many small genetic variations inherited from parents, and sometimes as a new (de novo) genetic change arising for the first time in the child. Twin studies show that when one identical twin is autistic, the other has a very high likelihood of being autistic too. Specific genetic syndromes (such as Fragile X) account for a small percentage of cases.

Other Contributing Factors

Some factors modestly raise the statistical likelihood - none of them is a "cause" a parent chose:

  • Parental age: children of older parents have somewhat higher rates
  • Prematurity and very low birth weight
  • Certain medicines in pregnancy: valproate (an epilepsy medicine) is a confirmed risk - women who need it should discuss options with their doctor before pregnancy, never stop it abruptly
  • Complications around birth that affect oxygen supply are associated with slightly higher rates

What Does NOT Cause Autism

  • Vaccines do not cause autism. The 1998 paper claiming an MMR-vaccine link was fraudulent - fully retracted, its author struck off the medical register - and every large study since, covering millions of children, has found no link. Vaccinating protects your child; it does not change who they are.
  • Parenting style does not cause autism. The old "refrigerator mother" idea was cruel nonsense, discarded decades ago. You did not cause this.
  • Screen time, diet during pregnancy, or "too much love/too little discipline" - none of these causes autism.

The Ayurvedic Perspective - An Honest Note

Classical Ayurvedic texts have no concept equivalent to autism. They describe isolated symptoms - a child unable to speak (Muka), unclear speech (Gadgada), developmental dullness (Jada) - but never the developmental pattern that defines autism. Any source claiming an "ancient Ayurvedic description of autism" is overstating history. The classical texts do offer gentle child-development principles (a calm environment, no frightening of children - Charaka Samhita, Sharira Sthana 8), but autism's causes, as far as modern evidence reaches, are genetic and developmental - not dietary sins, karma, or parental error.

Frequently Asked Questions

If autism is genetic, why does no one in our family have it? Genetic conditions can appear without a family history - through new genetic changes, or combinations of ordinary variations from both parents. Absence of family history is common and does not contradict a genetic basis.

Can autism be detected before birth? No reliable prenatal test exists. Autism is a behavioural-developmental diagnosis made in early childhood, usually recognisable by age two or three.

Does mercury in anything cause autism? No. Studies examining mercury exposure, including the old vaccine preservative (removed long ago from childhood vaccines in most countries), found no link to autism.

Why are more children diagnosed now than 30 years ago? Mostly broader definitions, better recognition (including in girls), and awareness - the spectrum was widened to include people who were always there but were called "shy," "slow" or "eccentric" instead.
