Medicines and products for autism

Introductory summary
No medicine treats autism itself - but sleep, severe irritability, ADHD, anxiety and epilepsy can be treated, unlocking learning. Plus the products to refuse.
Medicines and Products for Autism
One sentence must lead: no medicine treats the core features of autism. Medicines have a real but narrower role - treating the things that come alongside autism (sleep problems, severe irritability, ADHD, anxiety, epilepsy) so that the child can learn, sleep and participate. Every pill should answer the question "which specific problem is this for?" - and "autism itself" is never the answer.
What Medicines Legitimately Treat
- Sleep difficulties: first melatonin (well-studied, genuinely helpful for autistic children's sleep) plus sleep routines - prescribed and reviewed by the paediatrician
- Severe irritability and aggression that endangers the child or others: risperidone or aripiprazole - approved for this specific purpose, used at the lowest dose, monitored for weight gain and metabolic effects, reviewed regularly, and tapered when possible. These are for danger-level behaviour, not for convenience.
- Co-occurring ADHD: standard ADHD medicines work in autistic children too, though response varies and side effects need closer watching
- Anxiety and depression: psychological support first; medicines (SSRIs) selectively, with monitoring
- Epilepsy: anticonvulsants when seizures co-occur - this one is non-negotiable medical treatment
The Non-Medicine Mainstay
The interventions with real evidence are therapies: early behavioural intervention, speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, structured teaching, and parent training. No capsule substitutes for teaching a child communication. If the budget is tight, spend it on therapy hours, not supplement shelves.
Products to Refuse Outright
- Chelation products - useless in autism, have killed children
- MMS/CDS ("miracle mineral solution") - industrial bleach; poisoning, not medicine
- Stem-cell "therapy" for autism - unproven, expensive, unregulated in much of India, and not endorsed by any major medical body
- "Cure" powders and secret formulas - past analyses have found hidden drugs and heavy metals
- Herbo-mineral rasa preparations in children - the classical tradition itself forbade drastic and heavy-metal preparations for children; modern toxicology agrees
- High-dose vitamin "protocols" - megadoses carry real toxicity; correct only proven deficiencies
Buying and Using Medicines Safely
Fixed prescriber (one paediatrician/psychiatrist who knows the whole list), fixed pharmacy, written doses, and a review date for every medicine. Report side effects rather than silently stopping - and equally, never continue a medicine for years without asking whether it is still needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my child be on medicines forever? Often not - many autistic children need no medicine at all, and those who do (for sleep, ADHD, irritability) are reviewed and often tapered as skills grow. Therapy gains are what reduce medicine needs.
Is risperidone dangerous? It is a serious medicine with real side effects (weight gain, hormonal effects) - which is why it is reserved for severe behaviour, started low, and monitored. In danger-level situations its benefit can be life-changing; for anything less, other approaches come first.
Are there medicines to make my child talk? None exist. Speech comes from speech therapy and communication support (including devices and sign when speech is slow) - beware anyone selling a pill for speech.
What about stem-cell therapy, which many centres advertise? It remains experimental for autism, with no established benefit and real risk. Major paediatric and neurology bodies do not recommend it outside registered clinical trials. If a centre sells it as treatment, that tells you what they are selling.
