Prevention of Chickenpox

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Two vaccine doses prevent chickenpox; isolation till the last crust protects the household - especially pregnant and weak-immunity contacts.

Chickenpox is one of the most preventable diseases on this site - a vaccine exists, and the isolation rules are simple. Prevention has two halves: vaccine and containment.

The vaccine (the real prevention)

  • Two doses of varicella vaccine give over 90% protection, and breakthrough disease when it occurs is usually mild
  • In India it is available at pediatricians and hospitals as an optional vaccine - strongly worth discussing for every child, and for non-immune adults (especially women planning pregnancy and healthcare workers)
  • Non-immune adults can be tested and vaccinated too - adult chickenpox is the rougher disease
  • After exposure: vaccination within 3-5 days of exposure can prevent or soften the disease - call the doctor fast if a non-immune child has been exposed

Containment at home (protecting the household)

  • Isolate the patient from non-immune family members until the LAST blister crusts - no new spots for 24 hours and all dry
  • Especially away from: pregnant women who never had chickenpox, newborns, and anyone with weak immunity - for them, exposure is an urgent doctor call (preventive antibody treatment exists)
  • Separate towels, bedding and utensils; regular handwashing; ventilate rooms
  • School and office: return only after full crusting

Breaking the school chain

One child attending school in the pre-rash contagious days seeds the classroom. If chickenpox is going around and your child is non-immune and unvaccinated, ask the pediatrician about the vaccine now rather than after the spots arrive.

Shingles connection

The same virus sleeps in nerve roots and can wake decades later as shingles. Adults over 50 can discuss the shingles vaccine with their doctor - preventing the second act of the same virus.

The classical prevention note

The classics had no vaccine, but their eruptive-fever isolation instinct - shelter the patient, protect the pregnant and the weak - anticipated containment. The vaccine completes what instinct started.

One-line summary

Two doses of varicella vaccine prevent the disease; isolating until the last crust protects the household; and exposed pregnant or immunosuppressed contacts need a doctor immediately.
