Home Remedies for Common Cold

Introductory summary
Rest, fluids, steam, saline, gargle and honey over age 1 genuinely ease a cold; antibiotics and megadose vitamin C do not.
No home remedy cures a cold - your immune system does that on schedule. But several home measures genuinely ease the days while it works, and a few popular ones are useless or worse. The honest list, both ways.
What genuinely helps
- Rest: the most underrated remedy; sleep is when immune work happens fastest. Even one proper rest day early beats pushing through
- Fluids: warm water, soups, dals, herbal teas - hydration thins mucus and soothes the throat. Simple khichdi counts as medicine here
- Steam inhalation (adults only): plain hot-water steam 5-10 minutes loosens congestion; do not use steam for children - scald risk with no proven benefit
- Salt-water gargle: half a teaspoon salt in warm water, 2-3 times daily - real relief for sore throat
- Saline nasal rinse or drops: clears the nose mechanically, safe for all ages including infants; especially useful before feeds and sleep in babies
- Honey: a teaspoon straight or in warm water/tea calms cough - evidence-backed, and better than most cough syrups. Never under 1 year of age
- Tulsi-ginger tea or a light kadha: warming comfort with centuries of practice behind it
- Warm compress on the face: eases sinus pressure
- Elevated head while sleeping: drains the nose, quiets the night cough
What does not help (or harms)
- Antibiotics: zero effect on viruses; they only add side effects and fuel resistance. The biggest cold mistake in India
- Vitamin C megadoses: at best a tiny effect started very early; not a treatment
- Cold drinks causing colds: a myth - the virus causes the cold; if cold water bothers your throat, skip it, but it caused nothing
- Over-the-counter multi-ingredient cold syrups in small children: not recommended under 6 years
One-line summary
Rest, fluids, steam, saline, gargle and honey (over age 1) are the home remedies that genuinely help a cold - antibiotics are the mistake, and vitamin C megadoses are mostly hope.
