Diet and Food Guidance for Dehydration

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Feed dehydration recovery with fluids first, then khichdi, banana, curd-rice and light dal-rice; skip oily, heavy and very sweet things for a few days; and let watery fruits, curd and salted drinks do quiet prevention all summer.

During and after dehydration, food is part of the rehydration - and the rules are gentler and simpler than most people think.

During the fluid-loss phase (diarrhoea, vomiting, heat illness)

  • Fluids first, food second: ORS and traditional salted drinks are the priority; food can wait a few hours
  • When the stomach settles: light, easy foods - rice, khichdi, dal-rice, curd-rice, banana, toast, plain potato
  • Banana deserves its reputation: potassium, gentle energy, binding in diarrhoea
  • Curd (plain, fresh): traditionally loved in Indian summers and genuinely sensible - probiotics and fluids together (avoid if it worsens an individual's stomach)
  • Small portions, more often

What to skip while recovering

  • Oily, spicy, very heavy food - the recovering gut protests
  • Very sweet juices and fizzy drinks - worsen diarrhoea
  • Milk in large amounts during acute diarrhoea (some people digest it poorly then) - curd is usually fine
  • High-fibre feast-mode salads on day one - gentle first, fibre later

Rebuilding over the week

  • Return to a normal balanced plate as appetite returns: dal, rice, vegetables, eggs, curd
  • Potassium-rich foods for the days after heavy losses: banana, coconut water, potato, dal
  • Salty foods are allowed and useful in the rehydration days - the body genuinely needs the sodium back
  • Zinc-rich foods (nuts, seeds, legumes) after diarrhoeal illness - zinc genuinely shortens diarrhoea in children (a doctor may prescribe it)

Summer eating as prevention

  • Water-rich foods through the hot months: watermelon, cucumber, curd, citrus, kokum and mango-panna traditions
  • Do not restrict salt fanatically in peak summer if you sweat heavily and eat home food - the sweating body needs some back
  • Carry water; eat on time; the fasting-plus-heat combination is a classic dehydration setup

One-line summary

Feed dehydration recovery with fluids first, then khichdi, banana, curd-rice and light dal-rice; skip the oily, very sweet and heavy for a few days; and let summer eating - watery fruits, curd, salted drinks - do quiet prevention all season.
