Yoga and Exercise for Dehydration
Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only
Introductory summary
Exercise is healthy; dehydration is the tax on unmanaged sweat. Drink before, sip during, replace with salts after long sessions, shift summer workouts out of the midday sun, and treat dizziness and cramps as stop signals, not character tests.
Yoga and exercise interact with dehydration mostly at one point: sweat. The practices themselves are fine and healthy - the question is managing fluids around them, especially in Indian summers.
Exercise and sweat: the real connection
- An hour of hard exercise can lose a litre or more of sweat - several litres in summer outdoor sport
- Before: drink 1-2 glasses in the two hours before a workout
- During: sip every 15-20 minutes for sessions over an hour
- After: replace what you sweated out - for long or very sweaty sessions, include salts (ORS, salted nimbu-pani, electrolyte drink)
- Weighing yourself before and after a long session shows exactly what you lost: replace about 1.5 times that
Hot-weather rules for the active
- Shift outdoor runs, sports and heavy workouts to early morning or evening in summer
- Hot yoga / heated studios: real dehydration setups - hydrate before and after, and skip them entirely in peak summer if you are not acclimatised
- Stop signals during exercise: dizziness, chills, headache, cramps, confusion - rest, shade, fluids
- Never "train through" heat illness symptoms
Yoga itself
- Ordinary asana and pranayama practice is not a dehydration risk - keep a bottle nearby in summer and that is mostly it
- During recovery from dehydration: gentle practice only for a day or two - the body is restoring salts and fluids, and strenuous flows can wait
- Breathing practices (sheetali, the traditional "cooling breath") are a pleasant traditional complement in hot months - comfort, not treatment
The myth to drop
- You cannot "detox" by sweating more - heavy sweating without replacement is just dehydration, whatever the marketing says
One-line summary
Exercise is healthy; dehydration is the tax on unmanaged sweat - drink before, sip during, replace with salts after, shift workouts out of the midday summer sun, and treat dizziness and cramps on the field as stop signals, not character tests.
