Symptoms of Dry Eye

Introductory summary
Dry eye symptoms: burning, grittiness, blink-clear blur, evening worsening - and why dry eyes water. Plus signs that are not dry eye.
Dry eye announces itself in ways that are easy to dismiss - until they start wearing you down by the end of every day.
The typical complaints:
- Burning or stinging, especially toward evening
- Grittiness - the feeling of sand or an eyelash in the eye that nothing dislodges
- Redness and tired, heavy eyes
- Blurred vision that clears when you blink - a classic dry-eye signature, because blinking briefly rebuilds the tear film
- Stringy mucus in or around the eyes
- Difficulty with contact lenses - lenses that used to be fine become intolerable
- Trouble with screens, reading or night driving, with symptoms worsening as the day goes on
And then the symptom that confuses everyone: watering. Dry eyes often water excessively. The dryness irritates the eye surface, which triggers a flood of reflex tears - but these are poor-quality emergency tears that run down the cheek without properly coating the eye. If your eyes water and feel dry at the same time, you are not imagining it. That combination is textbook dry eye.
Symptoms that are NOT typical dry eye and need a prompt eye examination instead:
- Significant pain (dry eye is discomfort, not real pain)
- Vision that stays blurred even after blinking
- Symptoms much worse in one eye than the other
- Light sensitivity, discharge that glues the lids shut, or a visible spot on the cornea
- Any symptom after a chemical splash or eye injury - that is an emergency, not dry eye
The everyday pattern - gritty, burning, end-of-day eyes that blink clear - is benign and manageable. The warning pattern is not, and the difference between them is exactly what an eye doctor is for.
