How to Treat or Cure Ear Infection

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Pain relief, watchful waiting or antibiotics, prescribed ear drops, follow-up, and grommets for glue ear.

Treating an ear infection starts with finding out which type it is. A doctor looks into the ear with an otoscope, and most diagnoses are clinical.

Step 1: Pain relief. Paracetamol or ibuprofen at the right dose for the child's weight, and rest. This is the first treatment in every case.

Step 2: Watch or treat. Mild middle ear infections in older children often settle on their own within 2 to 3 days. Doctors may delay antibiotics and review the child. Younger children and severe cases get antibiotics, usually amoxicillin, and the full course should be completed.

Step 3: The right ear drops. Swimmer's ear is treated with prescribed ear drops. The ear canal may need cleaning by a doctor, who can also check that the eardrum is intact.

Step 4: Review. If the child is not better after 2 to 3 days, or symptoms return, go back. Do not keep trying home remedies.

Glue ear and repeated infections

  • Glue ear is usually watched for about 3 months, with a hearing test.
  • Children with repeated infections, or fluid that does not clear and affects hearing and speech, may be offered grommets (tiny ear tubes). It is a short operation with a big hearing benefit, and the tubes usually fall out on their own.
  • Long-term ear discharge needs an ENT specialist.

Where Ayurveda fits. It can be used as a supportive framework alongside medical care for recovery, but it is not a substitute for examination and antibiotics where needed. Never put oil or juice in the ear without a doctor's clearance.

In short: relieve pain first, let a doctor decide on antibiotics or drops, keep the ear dry and clean of home remedies, and follow up if the problem is not clearing. Most children recover fully, and good follow-up protects their hearing.
