Types of Ear Infection

Introductory summary
Acute otitis media, glue ear, swimmer's ear and chronic discharge: the types of ear infection and the classical karnaroga view.
"Ear infection" covers several different problems, and the treatment is different for each.
1. Acute otitis media (AOM). A sudden infection of the middle ear behind the eardrum. Pain, fever, and a red, bulging eardrum on examination. This is the classic childhood ear infection.
2. Otitis media with effusion (glue ear). Fluid stays in the middle ear after an infection or a cold, without active infection. It often causes mild hearing loss and is a common reason for delayed speech in young children. Most cases clear within a few months, but persistent ones need a hearing check.
3. Otitis externa (swimmer's ear). Infection of the ear canal skin, linked to water and scratching. Pain on touching or pulling the ear is the clue.
4. Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM). A long-standing hole in the eardrum with discharge that keeps coming back or does not stop. This needs an ENT specialist, not home treatment.
How the classics describe ear disease
Classical Ayurveda groups ear problems under karnaroga. Karnashula is ear pain, karnasrava is ear discharge, karnapaka is inflammation of the canal, and badhirya is hearing loss. These names map loosely onto modern types - for example, karnasrava resembles a draining ear and karnapaka resembles an inflamed canal. The match is approximate and should be read as a way of organising symptoms, not as a diagnosis.
Knowing the type helps you ask the doctor the right question: is this a fresh infection, leftover fluid, or a problem of the outer canal? The answer decides whether antibiotics, ear drops, a hearing test or just waiting is the right plan.
