Paraplegia in special cases (pregnancy, children, elderly)

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Paraplegia in pregnancy, childhood and older age, with care points for each.

Paraplegia has special concerns in pregnancy, childhood and older age. Each calls for a team approach.

Pregnancy

  • Women with paraplegia can become pregnant and have healthy babies, with planning and monitoring by an obstetrician and rehabilitation team
  • Common risks: urinary infections, pressure sores, blood clots, constipation, anaemia and reduced mobility
  • Autonomic dysreflexia may occur during labour in injuries at about T6 and above. This is an emergency and the team should plan for it.
  • Delivery is often vaginal. Caesarean section is used for obstetric reasons.
  • Review all medicines, including baclofen and blood thinners, before pregnancy

Children

  • Causes include injury, birth conditions such as spina bifida, infection and tumours
  • Growth can cause spine curvature (scoliosis) and hip problems, which need regular checks
  • Pressure sore and bladder care must be taught to the family and the child
  • School, play and friendships matter. Inclusive education and adapted sport help.

Older adults

  • Causes include falls with spinal stenosis, tumours and degenerative disease
  • Bone loss, heart disease, swallowing and chest problems and slow healing are more common
  • Falls and fractures are a larger risk, so equipment and home changes matter
  • Medicine side effects such as sleepiness with baclofen need review

Ayurvedic view

Gentle diet and routine may support comfort. Avoid forceful massage, and do not use herbs in pregnancy or in children without medical advice. This is a supportive framework.

See a doctor if you are pregnant with a spinal cord injury, or a child or older person has new weakness or skin changes.

Remember

Care plans should fit age and life stage. Early specialist input leads to the safest outcomes.
