Stages of schizophrenia

Introductory summary
Stages of schizophrenia from early signs to recovery and relapse.
Schizophrenia often develops and changes over years. Doctors describe three broad phases, which help families know what to expect and when to seek help. Not everyone goes through the phases in the same way, and many people recover well.
Prodromal (early) phase Weeks to years before the first episode, there may be subtle changes: social withdrawal, falling performance at work or school, trouble concentrating, unusual thoughts, sleep problems, irritability and neglect of self-care. These signs are easy to miss or to attribute to stress.
Acute (active) phase This is when positive symptoms appear or worsen, such as hallucinations, delusions and disorganised thinking or behaviour. The person may be frightened, confused or agitated, and may need urgent treatment, sometimes in hospital. With treatment, the acute phase often improves within weeks.
Recovery or stabilisation phase Symptoms settle with medicine and support, though tiredness, low motivation and thinking difficulties may linger. Treatment continues to prevent relapse.
Residual or maintenance phase Between episodes, some people have mild or no symptoms, while others have ongoing negative symptoms. Regular medicine, therapy, family support, structured routines and work or study rehabilitation help people stay well.
Relapse Relapse is common, especially after stopping medicine, using substances, sleeping poorly or facing major stress. Early signs include sleeplessness, suspiciousness and withdrawal. Contact the psychiatrist early.
Outlook About one in five people recover fully. Many others live well with treatment and support, and some need more help over time. Staying in treatment improves outcomes.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive) Ayurveda considers psychiatric illness as progressing with disturbed doshas and reduced mental clarity. This is a conceptual comparison only.
Remember Stages are a guide, not a prediction. Early help and steady treatment make recovery more likely.
