Introductory summary
What smallpox was, how it was eradicated and why it still matters.
Smallpox was a serious infectious disease caused by the variola virus. It spread from person to person, caused fever and a widespread blistering rash, and killed about three in ten of those infected. Survivors were often left with deep scars and some were blinded.
Eradicated, but still worth understanding Smallpox is the only human disease declared eradicated. After a worldwide vaccination campaign, the last natural case occurred in 1977 and the World Health Organization declared the world free of smallpox in 1980. Today the virus survives only in a small number of high-security laboratories. No one gets smallpox in daily life now.
Why it still matters
- It explains the history of vaccines. The first vaccine in the world was developed against smallpox.
- Doctors and health agencies keep emergency plans in case the virus is ever released deliberately or by accident.
- Mpox and chickenpox are different diseases, though they can look somewhat similar. A blistering rash should be checked by a doctor rather than assumed to be smallpox.
Traditional records Ancient Indian and other texts describe pox-like illnesses, known in India as Masurika. In folk tradition, the disease was linked with a goddess, and many rituals grew around it. These records are part of cultural history.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive) Classical texts describe Masurika as a serious febrile eruptive disease linked to disturbed doshas and blood. This is a historical, conceptual framework. It does not offer any treatment for variola, and no Ayurvedic remedy has been shown to prevent or treat smallpox.
If you have a fever with a new blistering rash See a doctor promptly. Seek urgent care (112 in India) for difficulty breathing, confusion, or a high fever that does not settle.
Remember Smallpox is gone from nature thanks to vaccination. This page is for education and history, not for self-diagnosis.
