Introductory summary
Historical Ayurvedic view of Masurika. No cure for smallpox.
Smallpox no longer exists in nature, so there is no current Ayurvedic treatment for it, and none was ever proven to cure or prevent it. This page explains what the traditional texts said, for historical understanding only.
What the texts describe Classical Ayurvedic literature describes a feverish illness with eruptions called Masurika (and related forms such as Romantika and Visphota). It was understood as a disease involving vitiated Pitta and Rakta (blood), sometimes with Kapha and Vata. The texts describe prognosis by the colour, spread and character of the eruptions.
Traditional approaches that were recorded
- Rest, isolation and light food during fever
- Cooling, bitter and astringent preparations, such as neem and sandalwood, used for soothing skin
- Attention to cleanliness and hygiene
- Observance of customs around the sick
What modern evidence says No herbal remedy has been shown to treat variola. The disease was ended by the vaccine and public health measures. Neem or other herbs may soothe the skin in some conditions, but they would not have changed the course of smallpox.
Vaccination in Indian history Records show that a form of inoculation (variolation) was practised in parts of India before Jenner's vaccine arrived. It carried real risks.
If a pox-like rash appears today It is most likely to be chickenpox, mpox or another condition. Do not treat it at home with herbs alone. See a doctor, and avoid close contact with others until it is assessed.
Safety Do not apply oils, pastes or herbs to blistered skin without medical advice. Call 112 for breathlessness, confusion or collapse.
Remember Ayurvedic texts are valuable as history. Vaccination, not herbs, ended smallpox.
