Diet and food guidance for snoring

Introductory summary
Diet and food guidance for snoring: weight, light dinners, no alcohol.
No single food causes or cures snoring, but eating patterns affect the main drivers: body weight, nasal congestion, reflux and sleep quality.
Helpful patterns
- Maintain a healthy weight with balanced meals; weight around the neck is closely linked to snoring and sleep apnea.
- Finish dinner two to three hours before bed, and keep it light.
- Choose vegetables, whole grains, dals, lean proteins and fruit through the day.
- Stay well hydrated; thick mucus is more likely when dehydrated.
Foods and drinks to limit at night
- Alcohol, especially within three to four hours of bedtime
- Heavy, fried and very oily dinners
- Large late-night meals, which can worsen reflux and disturbed sleep
- For some people, heavy dairy at night seems to thicken mucus; this varies from person to person
Reflux and snoring Acid reflux can irritate the throat. Smaller evening meals, less spice at night and not lying down soon after eating may help both reflux and snoring.
Traditional notes Ayurveda advises light, warm dinners and avoiding very cold, heavy food at night to reduce Kapha. This fits with general advice, though it is not a treatment.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive) Kapha-reducing diets are traditional and interpretive; evidence for specific foods against snoring is limited.
When to see a doctor Snoring with pauses, gasping or daytime sleepiness needs a medical check, not diet change alone. Call 112 for breathlessness or chest pain.
Remember Keep a healthy weight, eat a light early dinner and skip alcohol at night.
