Introductory summary
How snoring is treated, from lifestyle to devices and surgery.
Snoring can usually be reduced, and often stopped, once the cause is known. The right treatment depends on whether it is simple snoring or part of sleep apnea.
Step 1: Find the cause A doctor checks the nose, throat, weight and sleep pattern. A sleep study is advised when there are pauses, gasping or daytime sleepiness.
Step 2: Lifestyle measures for everyone
- Weight loss if overweight
- Side-sleeping
- No alcohol or sedatives near bedtime
- Stopping smoking
- Treating nasal allergy and blockage
Step 3: Targeted treatment
- Nasal snoring: saline rinses, steroid sprays for allergy, nasal dilator strips, or surgery for a deviated septum or polyps.
- Palatal or tongue-base snoring: a dentist-fitted mandibular advancement device; sometimes palate procedures in selected patients.
- Children with enlarged tonsils or adenoids: removal often cures the snoring.
- Snoring with sleep apnea: CPAP is the main treatment, with dental devices or surgery as alternatives.
Step 4: Review Weight, nasal health and sleep should be reviewed; snoring can return with weight gain or new blockage.
Is there a permanent cure? Sometimes, when a structural cause is corrected. For many people, snoring is controlled rather than cured.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive) Traditional measures may support weight and nasal care but cannot fix a structural blockage or treat sleep apnea.
Safety Do not rely on online "cures". Call 112 for breathlessness or chest pain.
Remember Treat the cause, and test for sleep apnea when snoring is loud with pauses or sleepiness.
