Diet and food guidance for tetanus

Introductory summary
In acute tetanus, diet is managed by the hospital - often by feeding tube; during recovery, a soft, protein-rich, easy-to-swallow diet rebuilds strength.
Diet and food guidance for tetanus
During the acute illness, diet is a hospital matter, not a home decision. Patients with tetanus often cannot open their mouth or swallow safely because of jaw stiffness and throat spasms. Choking on food or liquids can be fatal, so do not force-feed a patient with tetanus - not even water, milk or herbal drinks. In the ICU, nutrition is given by feeding tube or intravenously until swallowing is safe again. Sedation and tracheostomy care, when needed, also change how feeding is done.
During recovery, as swallowing returns:
- Start with soft, moist, easy-to-swallow foods: dal water, khichdi, porridge, curd, mashed banana, soups and smoothies, exactly as the treating team advises.
- Rebuild with protein - dal, eggs, milk, paneer, soft fish or well-cooked chicken - to repair the muscle damage and weight loss from weeks of spasms.
- Include iron- and vitamin-rich foods (green leafy vegetables, fruits) for strength and healing.
- Small, frequent meals are easier than large ones while weakness lasts.
- Good hydration supports recovery; swallowing safety comes first, so follow the hospital's guidance on thickeners if liquids are hard to manage.
There is no food that prevents or cures tetanus. Nutrition supports recovery; vaccination prevents the disease.
Remember: never feed a patient in acute tetanus - the hospital manages nutrition. Recovery diet is soft, protein-rich and guided by the treating team.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive)
Ayurvedic convalescent diets - light, warm, nourishing foods like khichdi and milk - fit the recovery phase well. They support healing after modern treatment, never instead of it.
