Medicines and products for thyroid disorder

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Hypothyroidism is treated with daily levothyroxine taken on an empty stomach; hyperthyroidism with antithyroid drugs, radioiodine or surgery - all with regular blood-test monitoring.

Medicines and products for thyroid disorder

For hypothyroidism: levothyroxine. This is a copy of the body's own T4 hormone - replacement, not a foreign drug. Key rules:

  • Taken once daily on an empty stomach, 30-60 minutes before food or tea/coffee, at the same time every day.
  • The dose is individualized by blood tests, checked 6-8 weeks after any change, then every 6-12 months.
  • Usually lifelong. Feeling well means the medicine is working - not that you can stop. Stopping brings back hypothyroidism within weeks.
  • Side effects are rare at the correct dose; too high a dose causes palpitations, tremor and bone thinning - which is why monitoring matters.
  • Pregnancy typically needs a higher dose, managed closely by the doctor.

For hyperthyroidism:

  • Antithyroid tablets (carbimazole, methimazole, or propylthiouracil in early pregnancy) calm the gland over months; a rare but serious side effect is a drop in white blood cells - fever or sore throat on these drugs means an urgent blood count.
  • Beta-blockers (like propranolol) control racing heart and tremor while the main treatment works.
  • Radioactive iodine is a one-time drink/capsule that permanently settles most cases, usually leaving treated hypothyroidism managed with levothyroxine.
  • Surgery for large goiters, nodules or when other options don't fit.

Products to avoid: kelp/iodine supplements, "thyroid support" herbal blends with undisclosed ingredients, desiccated animal-thyroid products sold online (uncontrolled hormone doses), and any product claiming to replace your prescription.

Remember: levothyroxine daily on an empty stomach, monitored by TSH - simple, safe and for life; hyperthyroidism has three proven routes, all doctor-managed.

Ayurvedic view (interpretive)

No Ayurvedic product can replace hormone levels or calm an overactive gland reliably. The medicines above, with monitoring, are the proven treatment.
