Medicines and products for whooping cough

Introductory summary
Azithromycin early or to stop spread, no cough syrups, ORS and humid air for support - and vaccines as the decisive product of all.
Whooping cough treatment rests on antibiotics, supportive care and - above all - vaccines for prevention. Knowing what each product actually does keeps expectations honest.
Antibiotics. Macrolides - azithromycin (preferred, especially for infants), clarithromycin, or erythromycin - are the standard. Their two jobs: started in the first one to two weeks (catarrhal stage), they shorten the illness; started later, they no longer shorten the cough but still clear the bacteria and stop the patient spreading it - important when infants or pregnant women are in the house. Close contacts of a case, especially vulnerable ones, may be given preventive antibiotics. All of this is prescription business.
What does NOT work: cough syrups and cough suppressants - none relieve pertussis fits, and they are unsafe in small children. Antihistamines, decongestants and most 'cough mixtures' are similarly useless here. This is well-studied; do not spend on them.
Supportive products with real value: ORS and fluids for hydration, a humidifier or steam-free humid air for comfort (avoid irritating vapours), and nutrition support as described in the diet section. Vitamin A supplementation for deficient children may be advised by the treating doctor.
Hospital products for severe (usually infant) cases: oxygen, monitoring for apnoea, IV fluids, treatment of pneumonia when it complicates - intensive supportive care is the treatment that saves lives.
The vaccine as a 'product' belongs in every pertussis conversation: pentavalent vaccine for infants on the national schedule, boosters in childhood, and Tdap in each pregnancy - prevention is the most effective product this disease has.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive): herbal cough products are comfort adjuncts at best within an interpretive framework of limited evidence - none treats pertussis, and none is for infants.
Remember: azithromycin early (or to stop spread), no cough syrups, ORS and humid air for support, hospital care for infants with danger signs - and vaccines as the decisive product of all.
