How to treat or cure whooping cough

Introductory summary
Infants and danger signs to hospital; older mild cases at home with antibiotics and supportive care; the cough resolves on its own clock.
How whooping cough is treated depends almost entirely on the patient's age and stage - the same disease is a home illness in an older child and a hospital emergency in a young infant.
Infants under six months (and anyone with danger signs): hospital. Apnoea, blue spells, poor feeding, seizures, breathing difficulty or pneumonia risk make this an inpatient illness - oxygen, monitoring, IV support, antibiotics, and watchful management of fits. There is no safe home version of infant pertussis.
Older children and adults with mild disease: home plus prescription. Antibiotics (azithromycin typically) - most useful in the first two weeks to shorten illness; given later, they still stop the patient infecting others, which matters when a baby or pregnant woman is nearby. Then supportive care: small frequent feeds, fluids, smoke-free calm air, night-time support, and patience through weeks of fits.
What treatment cannot do: once the paroxysmal stage sets in, no medicine reliably stops the fits - the cough burns out over weeks as the airways heal. The honest goals of treatment are preventing spread, preventing complications, and supporting the patient through the course. Promises of quick cures (from any system) misunderstand the disease.
Contacts get their own treatment: preventive antibiotics for close contacts at risk, and vaccination catch-up for the under-immunized - treating the ring around the patient protects the next victim.
Follow-up triggers: worsening fever (pneumonia), ear pain (ear infection), dehydration, weight loss, or fits intensifying instead of easing after the peak weeks.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive): adjunctive comfort measures for mild older-patient cases fit within an interpretive framework of limited evidence - never replacing antibiotics' spread-control role or hospital care for infants.
Remember: infants and danger signs to hospital; older mild cases at home with azithromycin and supportive care; contacts protected with antibiotics and vaccines. The cough resolves on its own clock - treatment protects, supports and contains.
