Prevention of whooping cough

Introductory summary
Full infant vaccination on time, Tdap in every pregnancy, boosters around the baby - pertussis deaths are vaccine-preventable deaths.
Whooping cough is preventable - vaccination is one of medicine's clear successes, and the strategy has three layers because protection fades with time.
Layer 1 - vaccinate every child on schedule. In India's Universal Immunisation Programme, the pentavalent vaccine (diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus plus hepatitis B and Hib) is given at 6, 10 and 14 weeks, with boosters in the second year and at 5-6 years. Completing the full course on time is the foundation - incomplete schedules leave children, and the infants around them, exposed.
Layer 2 - vaccinate in every pregnancy. A Tdap dose in the third trimester of EACH pregnancy (as advised nationally and by your doctor) passes antibodies to the baby - protecting the infant through the most dangerous first months before their own vaccines can work. This single step has transformed newborn protection.
Layer 3 - cocooning and contact protection. Everyone around a newborn - parents, grandparents, siblings, caregivers - should have up-to-date pertussis protection; waning adult immunity is the usual source of infant infection. When a case occurs, doctors may give preventive antibiotics to close contacts, especially infants, pregnant women and the vulnerable.
Everyday transmission control. A known case stays away from infants and unvaccinated children until no longer contagious (5 days of antibiotics, or 3 weeks into the fits); cough etiquette (covering, hand-washing) and ventilated rooms reduce droplet spread; suspected cases seek early testing precisely because the cold-like first stage is the most contagious.
What does not prevent it: any food, herb or home remedy. Immunity to pertussis comes from the vaccine or past infection - and both fade, which is why the layers above repeat across life.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive): no traditional measure prevents a bacterial droplet infection; the interpretive framework offers adjuncts for resilience at best. Vaccination carries the prevention.
Remember: full infant vaccination on time, Tdap in every pregnancy, boosters for the people around the baby, and early isolation-plus-antibiotics around a case. Pertussis deaths are vaccine-preventable deaths.
