SSRIs, SNRIs and the benzodiazepine caution: what actually works for anxiety, what is risky, and which products to avoid.
Medicines and Products for Anxiety
Medicines have a real, evidence-backed role in treating anxiety disorders - and also real limits and real risks, especially dependence with some of them. This article lays out what works, what to be careful with, and what to avoid, so the conversation with your doctor starts informed. All anxiety medication decisions belong with a doctor; nothing here is a personal prescription.
The Medicines With Strong Evidence
- SSRIs (such as sertraline, escitalopram): the first-line medication for most anxiety disorders. They take two to four weeks to work, are taken daily (not "as needed"), and are usually continued for many months after improvement. Not addictive. Early side effects (nausea, jitteriness) usually settle; tell the doctor rather than stopping silently
- SNRIs (such as venlafaxine): a similar, equally established option
- Others for specific situations: pregabalin, buspirone, certain antihistamines, and beta-blockers (for the physical symptoms of performance anxiety) all have defined roles
Benzodiazepines: Effective, Fast - and Risky
Drugs like alprazolam, lorazepam and clonazepam calm anxiety within minutes, which is exactly why they are both useful and dangerous: dependence can develop within weeks of daily use, tolerance builds, and stopping suddenly can trigger severe withdrawal, even seizures. Modern practice uses them short-term and sparingly - days to a few weeks, not as a long-term plan. If you have been taking them regularly, never stop abruptly; a doctor must taper them.
What Treatment Actually Looks Like
Medication decisions follow severity and response: therapy alone for many milder cases; medication added or started alongside therapy for moderate to severe, persistent or relapsing anxiety. Reviews happen regularly; stopping, when the time comes, is gradual and planned. The commonest medication failure is giving up at day ten - the medicines need their weeks.
Products to Be Wary Of
- "Natural calm" supplements with big claims: mostly untested, unregulated, sometimes adulterated with actual pharmaceuticals
- Online benzodiazepines or sleeping pills without prescription: illegal, dangerous, and often counterfeit
- CBD and cannabis products: evidence is weak, quality is chaotic, and cannabis worsens anxiety for many users
- Alcohol as self-medication: the commonest and most harmful anxiolytic in the world
The Ayurvedic View on Products
Classical medicine had its own pharmacopoeia for the anxious mind - Brahmi, Shankhpushpi, Jatamansi, Ashwagandha, and formulations like Saraswatarishta and Brahmi Ghrita - discussed in the Ayurvedic treatment article of this series. The rules that keep you safe are the same in both systems: use them under a qualified physician, buy quality, and disclose everything you take to every doctor treating you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will anxiety medication change my personality? No - the goal is to remove the static of excessive alarm, not to sedate or flatten you. People usually describe feeling more like themselves. Emotional blunting can occur with some medicines and is a reason to adjust, not endure.
Are SSRIs addictive? No. They do not create craving or dependence in the addictive sense; stopping needs gradual tapering only to avoid temporary discontinuation symptoms.
How long will I be on medication? Typically six to twelve months after recovery for a first episode - longer for recurrent illness, decided with your psychiatrist. Stopping early is the commonest cause of relapse.
Can I take herbal calmatives with my prescription? Only after telling your doctor exactly what they are. Several herbs interact with psychiatric medicines, and your doctor needs the complete picture.
