Symptoms of Calcium Deficiency

Introductory summary
Calcium deficiency symptoms: night cramps, tingling, brittle nails - and why it stays silent for years.
Early calcium deficiency is famously quiet - the skeleton pays the bill silently. Symptoms appear late, or when blood calcium itself falls.
The silent phase
Most people with chronically low intake feel nothing for years. The first sign is often a bone density report (osteopenia), a height loss noticed in old photographs, or a fracture from a minor fall. This is why at-risk people should not wait for symptoms.
Everyday symptoms when deficiency bites
- Muscle cramps: calf cramps at night, foot spasms
- Tingling and numbness: around the mouth, in fingers and toes
- Muscle aches and weakness: climbing stairs feels harder
- Fatigue and poor sleep: nonspecific but common
- Brittle nails, dry skin, coarse hair: softer signs, shared with other deficiencies
- Dental problems: weak teeth, delayed dentition in children
- In children: delayed walking, bowing of legs, knock knees, beaded ribs (rickets when vitamin D is also low)
Warning signs of severely low blood calcium (medical emergency)
- Strong tingling progressing to muscle twitching
- Hand and foot spasms that lock (carpopedal spasm)
- Hoarse voice or throat tightness (laryngeal spasm)
- Seizures, confusion, or palpitations with abnormal heart rhythm
These are rare (usually after thyroid/parathyroid surgery or in severe illness) but are emergencies - call 112 / 102.
The classical picture
Classical texts describe Asthi Kshaya with a strikingly recognizable verse. Charaka (Sutra Sthana 28, verse 16): bone pain (asthi-shula), breaking and falling teeth (danta-bheda, danta-pata), and brittle, falling hair and nails (kesha-nakha-loma-pata). Sushruta (Sutra Sthana 15, verse 13) adds pricking bone pain and dryness; Ashtanga Hridaya (Sutra Sthana 11, verse 18) adds bodily weakness. Teeth, nails and hair are exactly the tissues Ayurveda counts as bone's own and its byproducts - a 2,000-year-old description that maps neatly onto the modern one.
One-line summary
Silent for years, then cramps and tingling; bone loss until it announces itself as a fracture - and true blood-calcium crises are emergencies, not home-remedy territory.
