Diet and Food Guidance for Calcium Deficiency

Introductory summary
Diet for calcium deficiency: dairy, ragi, sesame, greens, absorption rules - build the 1,000 mg day.
Food is where calcium deficiency is actually fixed. This is the practical guide: what gives how much, and how to build the day.
The richest everyday sources
- Dairy: milk, curd, paneer, buttermilk - roughly 300 mg per 250 ml of milk; paneer and cheese denser still
- Ragi (finger millet): around 340 mg per 100 g - the champion grain; ragi rotis, dosa, porridge, malt
- Sesame seeds: exceptionally dense per gram - chutneys, laddus, sprinkled on salads
- Green leaves: amaranth (chaulai), methi, bathua, drumstick leaves, curry leaves in quantity
- Soy and pulses: soybean, tofu, rajma, chana contribute steadily
- Nuts and seeds: almonds, chia
- Fish with edible bones: small dried fish, canned sardine-style preparations where customary
Building the day (adult target ~1,000 mg)
- Morning: milk or ragi porridge
- Lunch: curd + a green sabzi + dal; ragi or multigrain roti
- Snack: sesame chutney, a handful of almonds, or buttermilk
- Dinner: paneer/soy preparation with vegetables
Hit the target with food first; supplements fill genuine gaps (see the medicines piece).
Absorption rules that matter more than lists
- Vitamin D is the gatekeeper: without it, absorption collapses - sunlight and (if deficient) supplements
- Divide the dose: the gut absorbs best under ~500 mg at a time
- Phytate-aware cooking: fermenting (dosa/idli batter), soaking and sprouting pulses reduce phytates that bind calcium
- Tea/coffee: an hour away from main meals
- Oxalate note: spinach is iron-rich but its calcium is poorly absorbed - count on amaranth-type greens instead
Special plates
- Children and adolescents: milk + ragi daily; this is when lifetime bone is banked
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: needs rise to ~1,000-1,200 mg; food plus the prescribed supplement
- Post-menopausal women: ~1,200 mg target with vitamin D
- Vegans: ragi, sesame, tofu set in calcium, fortified plant milks, greens - workable with planning
- Kidney stone history: food calcium is protective; discuss supplements with your doctor
The classical pathya
The classical bone-depletion diet is the same table: fresh cow's milk (Charaka, Sutra Sthana 27; Ashtanga Hridaya, Sutra Sthana 5 - vitalizing, tissue-building), ghee, sesame (named asthi-sandhanaka - bone-strengthening - in Charaka, Sutra Sthana 27), ragi-type millets, mung, meat soups (for non-vegetarians), warm freshly cooked food - and it warns against the depleting pattern: dry, cold, stale food, irregular meals, excessive fasting.
One-line summary
Dairy or ragi at the center, sesame and greens around it, vitamin D to unlock it, tea away from meals - build the day, and the deficiency usually fixes itself.
