Prevention of Corns

Introductory summary
Roomy cushioned shoes, socks, daily moisturizing and early deformity care - plus the diabetic rules that prevent ulcers, not just corns.
Corns are among the most preventable foot problems: they are made by pressure, and pressure is yours to change. The rules are mostly about shoes - with a special chapter for diabetic feet.
The footwear rules (the whole game)
- Fit first: a thumb's width of space beyond the longest toe; toes should wiggle freely; no rubbing anywhere when you walk in the shop, not just standing
- Low, broad heels for daily wear; save the high heels for short occasions
- Soft uppers and cushioned soles; replace worn-out shoes - compressed cushioning is no cushioning
- Always socks or stocking liners: a clean, dry layer between skin and shoe
- Rotate shoes: different pairs pressure slightly different spots
- Buy shoes in the evening: feet swell through the day; morning-fit shoes squeeze by night
The foot-care habits
- Moisturize feet daily (not between the toes): supple skin resists friction-thickening better than cracked dry skin
- Trim toenails straight and short: long nails push toes up into the shoe
- Address deformities early: a developing bunion or hammer toe is easier to accommodate than an advanced one - a foot specialist can advise padding, orthotics or exercises
- Check your feet weekly (daily if diabetic): catch thickening while it is still just a callus
Occupations that stand
Teachers, nurses, security staff, retail workers: cushioned insoles, rotation of footwear, and taking sitting breaks genuinely prevent the occupational corn.
The diabetes rule
Every item above applies twice over. Daily foot inspection, never walking barefoot (even at home), immediate professional attention for any thickening, color change or break in the skin. In diabetes, corn prevention is ulcer prevention.
One-line summary
Corns are prevented by roomy, cushioned, low-heeled shoes with socks, daily foot moisturizing, early attention to deformities - and for diabetics, daily inspection and zero barefoot walking.
