Yoga and Exercise for Dengue

Introductory summary
Rest during the fever, then gentle pranayama, stretches and walks - a patient ladder back to strength after dengue.
During dengue fever there is no yoga prescription - the right practice is rest. Yoga enters in recovery, when weakness lingers and the body needs a gentle ramp back to strength.
During the fever: none
- Acute dengue is a rest-only illness - no asana, no strong pranayama, no "sweating it out"; exertion during the illness is genuinely unhelpful
- The one acceptable practice: slow, easy breathing if it is calming - nothing forceful
Early recovery (energy partially back)
- Pranayama first: gentle anulom-vilom (alternate-nostril breathing) 5 minutes, and easy deep breathing - settles the nervous system after a draining illness
- Very gentle stretches in bed or on the mat: neck rolls, shoulder rotations, ankle movements - circulation without exertion
- Short slow walks - 5-10 minutes - before any asana practice; walking is the real first exercise
Rebuilding (1-2 weeks after fever)
- Gentle asana: tadasana, vajrasana after meals, balasana, shavasana - restorative postures, held easily
- Sukshma vyayama (joint-loosening sequence) - the classical gentle route back
- Add standing postures and longer walks only as energy honestly allows
- Bhramari and anulom-vilom continue - low-cost, calming, sustainable
What to skip until fully strong
- No vigorous surya namaskar, no strong inversions, no kapalabhati or forceful breathing for several weeks - the body is still repairing its platelets and blood vessels
- No gym or heavy lifting until the doctor's follow-up is clear and energy is fully back
- The test is honest: if the practice leaves you exhausted rather than refreshed, scale back
One-line summary
Dengue's yoga is rest during the fever, then a patient ladder - breathing and gentle stretches first, walks and restorative asana next, vigorous practice only after weeks of honest recovery - because the body is rebuilding its blood, not just its mood.
