How to Treat or Cure Dengue

Introductory summary
NS1 test early, paracetamol only, aggressive fluids, daily platelet tracking - and why days 3-7 after fever falls decide everything.
Treating dengue is mostly excellent nursing plus watchful monitoring - the body clears the virus itself. Here is the practical playbook from day 1 to full recovery.
Days 1-3: the febrile phase
- Confirm the suspicion: NS1 antigen test within the first 5 days
- Paracetamol only for fever and body ache - no aspirin, ibuprofen or combiflam, ever
- Push fluids: 2-3 litres a day - water, coconut water, nimbu-sharbat, ORS, soups
- Complete rest; light food as tolerated
- Start platelet monitoring: a baseline count, then as the doctor advises
Days 3-7: the danger window (watch hardest when fever falls)
- This is when plasma leakage can start - the fever dropping is NOT the all-clear
- Watch for warning signs: severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding gums or black stools, extreme lethargy or restlessness, cold hands and feet
- Any warning sign = hospital immediately - IV fluids given correctly in this phase are lifesaving
- Daily platelet and haematocrit checks during this window, or as the treating doctor directs
What the numbers mean
- Platelets trend matters more than any single number - many patients recover uneventfully at surprisingly low counts
- Platelet transfusion is NOT given just for a low number - it is for active bleeding or specific severe situations
- Rising haematocrit with falling platelets can signal plasma leakage - that combination needs a doctor's eyes
After the fever: recovery week
- Expect weakness for 1-2 weeks - that is normal dengue recovery, not a new problem
- Gradual return to normal food and activity; fluids stay high
- Avoid strenuous exercise until energy is back
- One caution for the future: a second dengue infection with a different type can be more severe - prevention matters even more after recovering once
One-line summary
Treat dengue with the NS1 test early, paracetamol only, aggressive fluids and rest, daily platelet tracking - and treat the day 3-7 window after fever falls as the real decision zone where warning signs mean hospital, because that is where dengue is won or lost.
