Medicines and Products for Dental Caries

Introductory summary
Fluoride toothpaste and varnish prevent and reverse early decay; remineralising pastes and xylitol support; no pill replaces a filling.
No tablet cures a cavity - but several genuine medicines and products prevent, slow and sometimes reverse the early stages, and a few relieve the pain while you reach the dentist.
Fluoride - the proven backbone
- Fluoride toothpaste (1000-1500 ppm): the everyday medicine for caries, twice daily - re-mineralises early white spots and hardens enamel against acid. Use a pea-size amount; spit, do not rinse hard
- Fluoride varnish: painted on by the dentist every few months for high-risk patients and children - strong evidence for preventing new decay
- Fluoride mouthrinse: a useful add-on for high-risk mouths (braces, dry mouth, past decay) - used at a different time than brushing
Other legitimate products
- Remineralising pastes (CPP-ACP / calcium-phosphate, e.g. GC Tooth Mousse type products): reasonable support for early lesions and sensitivity
- Desensitising toothpastes (potassium nitrate, stannous fluoride): for the cold-sweet twinge stage - they manage the symptom while the cause gets treated
- Chlorhexidine mouthwash: a short-course prescription rinse that knocks down cavity bacteria - for specific situations, not daily life (it stains with long use)
- Xylitol gum and lozenges: genuinely reduces cavity bacteria and stimulates saliva - a sensible sugar-free habit after meals
For the pain (until the dentist)
- Paracetamol or ibuprofen: both are safe and effective for dental pain; ibuprofen often works best for the inflammatory throb
- Clove oil on cotton: the traditional, genuinely numbing local option
What does not work
- No painkiller, antibiotic or herbal tablet treats the cavity itself - antibiotics are useless for an uncomplicated cavity and do not replace treating the tooth
- "Herbal" tooth powders with no fluoride: they clean, they do not protect like fluoride
One-line summary
The medicine cabinet for caries is fluoride toothpaste and varnish to prevent and reverse early decay, remineralising and desensitising products for support, xylitol as a habit, and paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain - while no pill, rinse or powder replaces the filling a cavitated tooth needs.
