Prevention of Eczema

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Prevent eczema flares: daily moisturising, avoiding triggers, cotton clothing and early treatment.

Eczema cannot always be prevented, but flares can often be reduced a great deal with simple habits.

Keep the skin barrier strong

  • Moisturise every day, even when the skin looks fine. This is the single most useful habit.
  • Use lukewarm baths and a gentle fragrance-free cleanser.
  • Apply moisturiser soon after bathing to lock in water.
  • Early moisturising in babies at higher risk, such as those with a parent who has eczema, may lower the chance of developing it. Ask your doctor about it.

Avoid triggers

  • Harsh soaps, perfumes, detergents and bubble baths.
  • Wool and rough fabrics. Choose soft cotton.
  • Overheating and sweating. Dress in layers you can remove.
  • Dust mites and pets, if they set off your skin.
  • Smoke and strong smells.
  • Known allergens confirmed by a doctor. Do not remove foods on a guess.

Look after the whole person

  • Sleep well, and manage stress with exercise, hobbies and rest.
  • Keep nails short.
  • Treat small flares early, before scratching damages the skin.

For hand eczema

Wear gloves for wet work and cleaning, with cotton liners, and moisturise after hand washing.

For babies and children

Keep fragrance-free moisturisers at hand, avoid overheating and rough clothing, and speak to a doctor before changing the diet.

A classical note. Ayurveda also advises avoiding irritants and incompatible foods, keeping the skin oiled, and managing stress. These ideas fit well with modern advice, though the underlying theory is interpretive.

A steady routine keeps flares fewer and shorter.
