Diet and Food Guidance for Eczema

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Diet rarely causes eczema. What evidence says on elimination diets, infant food allergy and balanced eating.

For most people with eczema, food is not the cause. Skin care and trigger control matter far more than diet. Some points are worth knowing.

What the evidence says

  • Most eczema is not caused by food. Cutting out milk, wheat, eggs or other foods "to clear the skin" does not help most people and can harm nutrition, especially in children.
  • Food allergy can play a part in some children, mainly infants with moderate or severe eczema. It should be confirmed by a doctor or allergist before any food is removed. Never remove a major food group on a guess.
  • Do not blame the mother's diet or breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is encouraged. Mothers do not need to avoid foods unless a doctor advises it.
  • Early introduction. Current guidance for infants, including those with eczema, is generally to introduce allergenic foods such as egg and peanut early under medical guidance, rather than delaying them.

What helps

  • A varied, balanced diet with enough protein, fruit and vegetables.
  • Drinking enough water.
  • Foods with omega-3 fats, such as fish, may support general health, though evidence for eczema is weak.
  • A healthy weight and good sleep.

What to avoid

  • Strict elimination diets, extreme detoxes and fasting.
  • Supplements and herbal products sold for "curing eczema." Evidence is weak, and some are not safe.

The classical view. Ayurveda advises avoiding incompatible food combinations, and very heavy, sour or fermented food if they seem to flare the skin. This is a traditional guideline, and evidence for it in eczema is limited. If you notice that a food clearly triggers a flare, note it and discuss it with a doctor.

Diet should support, not replace, moisturiser and treatment.
