Diet and Food Guidance for Gallstones
Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only
Introductory summary
A gallstone diet favours fibre and lighter meals, limits fried and fatty food, and cannot dissolve existing stones.
Diet cannot dissolve gallstones that already exist, but it can lower the chance of new stones and reduce the number of attacks.
Foods that generally help
- Fibre: vegetables, fruit, whole grains, dals and oats
- Healthy fats in small amounts: nuts, seeds, olive or mustard oil in moderation
- Lean protein: pulses, curd, fish and eggs as suited
- Plenty of water through the day
- Regular, moderate meals instead of long gaps and heavy dinners
Foods to limit
- Deep-fried food, bhature, samosa and pakoras
- Ghee, butter, cream and fatty red meat in large amounts
- Sweets, refined flour and sugary drinks
- Packaged and processed snacks
Weight loss, done gently
Slow loss of about 0.5 kg a week is safer. Crash diets, very-low-calorie plans and skipping meals raise the risk of stones. Ask a doctor or dietitian before major changes.
Coffee and vitamin C
Some studies link regular coffee and adequate vitamin C from food with fewer stones, but the evidence is not strong enough to treat them as a remedy.
After gallbladder removal
Most people eat normally. Some find very fatty food causes loose stools for a while.
Key point
No food or herb is proven to dissolve gallstones. Diet is supportive and never a substitute for medical care.
Sample day of lighter eating
A balanced day might include oats or poha with fruit, dal with rice or roti and vegetables, curd, and a light dinner such as khichdi or vegetable soup, with a handful of nuts as a snack. Cook with little oil, and avoid heavy late-night meals.
