Home Remedies for Hiccups

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Hiccups home care: slow sips, brief breath-holding and leaning forward, plus what to avoid and baby safety.

For short episodes, simple home steps are safe to try. They are based on experience, and scientific proof is limited.

Simple things to try

  • Sip cold or warm water slowly.
  • Hold your breath for 10 to 20 seconds, then breathe out slowly. Stop if you feel dizzy.
  • Breathe slowly into a paper bag for a few breaths only. Do not cover the face or use a plastic bag.
  • Sit upright and lean slightly forward, which gently compresses the chest.
  • Hug your knees to your chest for a minute.
  • Gargle with water.

What to avoid

  • Do not scare, shock or pull a person's tongue.
  • Do not give anything to eat or drink to someone who is choking, drowsy or has a weak swallow.
  • Avoid forceful pressure on the eyes or neck.
  • Do not put anything in the nose or ear.

For babies

  • Hiccups after a feed usually settle. Burp the baby, keep them upright and feed calmly.
  • Do not give honey to a baby under 12 months.
  • Do not use herbal drops, home remedies or tricks that startle an infant unless a paediatrician advises it.

When to stop home care

Go to a doctor if hiccups last more than 48 hours, or with chest pain, vomiting or trouble breathing.

Key point

Home tricks are for short episodes only. Persistent hiccups need a medical check.

Before your appointment

Note when the hiccups began, how long they last, what seems to trigger or ease them, and whether they disturb sleep or eating. List all medicines, alcohol use, recent surgery and any reflux, chest pain, weakness or breathing trouble. Bring past reports. Ask about tests, treatment options and the warning signs that mean you should call 112 or 102.
