Types of High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is grouped by cause, by pattern of readings and by severity.

By cause

• Primary (essential) hypertension: no single identifiable cause, developing gradually. It is the most common type.
• Secondary hypertension: caused by another condition or medicine, such as kidney disease, hormonal disorders or sleep apnoea.

By pattern of readings

• Isolated systolic hypertension: only the top number is high, common in older adults.
• White coat hypertension: high in the clinic but normal at home.
• Masked hypertension: normal in the clinic but high at home or in daily life.
• Resistant hypertension: stays high despite three or more medicines, including a diuretic. It needs specialist review.
• Nocturnal hypertension: high readings at night.

Special forms

• Gestational hypertension and pre-eclampsia: high blood pressure in pregnancy.
• Hypertensive urgency and emergency: very high readings, with or without organ damage.
• Pulmonary hypertension: high pressure in lung arteries. It is a different condition.

Why it matters

Knowing the type changes how it is tested and treated. Home or 24-hour monitoring can separate white coat and masked forms.

Before your appointment

Bring your home blood pressure log, with dates and times. List all medicines and supplements, including painkillers, herbal products and any Ayurvedic preparations. Note symptoms such as headache, chest pain or breathlessness, family history, salt intake, alcohol, sleep and any pregnancy plans. Ask about your target pressure, tests, medicines and the warning signs that mean you should call 112 or 102.
