Introductory summary
Measles medicines: no antiviral exists. Paracetamol, vitamin A under a doctor, antibiotics for complications and MR vaccine.
There is no antiviral medicine for measles. Treatment supports the body while it clears the virus and treats complications.
What doctors may advise
- Paracetamol: for fever and discomfort, in the dose for age and weight. Aspirin should be avoided in children.
- Vitamin A: the World Health Organization advises two doses, on two consecutive days, for children with measles. The dose depends on age. Give it only as a doctor directs.
- Oral rehydration solution: for diarrhoea or poor drinking
- Antibiotics: only if a bacterial infection such as ear infection or pneumonia develops. They do not treat measles itself.
- Eye care: an ointment or drops only if a doctor prescribes it
- Hospital care: oxygen, fluids and monitoring for severe cases
Measles vaccine
The measles vaccine, given as MR (measles and rubella) or MMR, is the key protection. In India it is given at 9 to 12 months and again at 16 to 24 months, under the national schedule. After exposure, a vaccine within 72 hours or immune globulin within 6 days can help some at-risk people. A doctor decides.
Cautions
- Do not use steroids, antibiotics or cough syrups without a doctor
- Do not give medicines meant for adults to a child
- Tell the doctor about pregnancy, allergies and weak immunity
- Ayurvedic or herbal products are not proven for measles and should be used only with a doctor aware
Key point
No tablet cures measles. Vaccination, vitamin A under a doctor and prompt care for complications are what works.
