How to Treat or Cure Measles

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

How measles is managed: doctor review, supportive care, vitamin A, treating complications and follow-up.

There is no medicine that kills the measles virus. Most children recover with supportive care in 1 to 2 weeks. A doctor should guide it, because complications can be serious.

Step 1: see a doctor

A doctor can confirm measles by the signs and a lab test, and tell it apart from rubella, dengue, scarlet fever and drug rashes. The case must be reported to health authorities in India.

Step 2: supportive care at home (uncomplicated)

  • Rest, fluids and small, frequent feeds
  • Paracetamol for fever in the dose advised
  • Gentle eye cleaning with boiled and cooled water
  • Isolation until 4 days after the rash began

Step 3: vitamin A

A doctor gives vitamin A, two doses on two days, which lowers the risk of severe disease and death in children.

Step 4: treat complications

  • Antibiotics for bacterial ear infection or pneumonia
  • Oral rehydration or drips for dehydration
  • Hospital care for breathing difficulty, fits or brain symptoms

Step 5: follow up

Watch the child for 2 to 4 weeks. Extra feeds help regain weight. Their immunity is lower for months, so seek care early for new fevers. Ask the doctor about any pending vaccines for the child.

Where Ayurveda fits

Traditional care is an adjunct for comfort and strength. It cannot cure measles or replace the vaccine.

Emergency (112 or 102)

Fast breathing, fits, confusion, stiff neck, very low urine or fever beyond 3 days after the rash.

Key point

Measles is managed, not cured by a drug. Early medical review prevents most complications.
