Yoga and Exercise for Meningitis
Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only
Introductory summary
Yoga and exercise after meningitis: only after recovery with a doctor's approval, gentle options and what to avoid.
Yoga and exercise do not prevent or treat meningitis. They have a limited, optional place only after full recovery, with a doctor's permission.
When not to practise
- During the illness, fever, headache or neck stiffness
- While in hospital or just after discharge
- If there is dizziness, confusion, fits or balance problems
- If there is hearing loss, weakness or vision problems that make movement unsafe
When to start
Recovery can take weeks to months. Ask the treating doctor before any activity. Begin only when fever is gone, headaches have settled and strength has returned.
Gentle options after recovery
- Short, slow walks: build up from a few minutes a day
- Diaphragmatic breathing: slow belly breathing while seated
- Gentle neck and shoulder movement: very slow, no forcing, and stop if pain returns
- Shavasana: lying relaxation for 5 to 10 minutes
- Light stretching: gentle and supported
What to avoid
- Head-down poses and inversions
- Strong breath holding and fast breathing
- Hot yoga and heavy exercise
- Practising alone if balance or seizures are a concern
After complications
A physiotherapist or rehabilitation team can plan exercise for weakness, balance or hearing problems.
Children
Children should return to play in steps as the doctor advises, not follow a yoga plan.
Key point
Rest comes first. Gentle movement is only for the recovery phase, and any return of headache or fever means call the doctor.
Remember
Go slowly and listen to the body. Any new headache, fever or dizziness means stop and call the doctor.
